Primary Ages 7-10

Art Around the World

Young artists will take a journey around the world as they discover art from four different countries. Each day kids will get to make one piece of art inspired by the art and scenery of a particular country. We will visit Australia, France, China and Africa.

Winter Painting: Cardinal in the Snow

Students will learn a variety of painting techniques as they create one painting of a cardinal on a snowy branch. We will cover the concepts of composition, working in layers, mixing colour, and three dimensional effects.

October 7, 21, 28, November 4

Leonardo DaVinci

A close look at the life and work of genius Leonardo DaVinci. Students will learn about DaVinci’s techniques for figure drawing, portrait drawing, sculpture and mechanical inventions. They will have an opportunity to create several drawings, sculptures and three dimensional models. Registered students should be comfortable using glue guns.

Spring Painting:  Bird on a Flowering Branch

Students will learn a variety of painting techniques as they create one painting of a spring bird on a flowering branch. We will cover the concepts of composition, working in layers, mixing colour, and three dimensional effects.

February 10, 24, March 2, 9

Intermediate Ages 11-14

Vincent VanGogh

Students will have an opportunity to take a close look at Vincent VanGogh’s painting techniques. We will focus on his use of broken colour areas and the emotional effects that the colours produce. We will also study VanGogh’s life story and how it influenced his art. Students will create several studies and one painting based on The Starry Night.

Working with Ink and Colour

Kids who are keen on drawing will learn tips and tricks for working in ink. We will study line weight variation, stippling and hatching as well as ink washes. Students will get an opportunity to create several trendy outdoor adventure scenes that combine ink with washes of colour. A great course for both beginners and experienced drawers.

October 7, 21, 28, November 4

Values

A pencil drawing course designed to build shading skills. Knowing how to properly shade allows students to bring their drawings to the next level. Students will learn to identify values and practice rendering light and shadow in a realistic way. Suitable for beginners and students with some drawing experience.

Colour Theory

A fun painting course that introduces students to the concepts of warm, cool, complimentary and monochromatic colour schemes. Each day students will study the effect of a different colour scheme and then have an opportunity to create an original work of art based on that scheme. Four projects, four colour schemes. Warm(sunflowers), cool(almond blossoms), complimentary(fruit), monochromatic (guitar)

High School Credit Course, Grade Nine Level
Course Fee: $200
Thursdays, 1:10-3:00pm, Alternating weeks, second semester only

This course provides a foundation for further study in the visual arts. Students will experiment with different media as they explore the art produced by a variety of cultures. They will learn to analyze various forms of art and place them in a historical context. There is a strong emphasis on the elements and principles of design, colour theory and art history. Students meet with the instructor once a month. The majority of the studio component of the course is done independently between classes. Students (and parents) should be prepared to incorporate art homework into their daily schedule for the duration of the class. All materials are provided, however, students must have a set of acrylic paint at home to complete assignments
